Chartres is best-known for its magnificent cathedral, but that’s not all the city has to offer! Our suggestions for memorable visits are on this page, and we have hard-copy visitor and restaurant information available at the B&B.
The Notre-Dame de Chartres cathedral (9 km from the B&B) is open all year, for public visits or for guided tours. Prepare your visit (book in advance to see the crypt or get a view from the rooftop) using the link below.
From August to January, take advantage of the Chartres light show, Chartres en Lumière, from dusk until 1 am. Free visit; information and maps here:
The Picassiette House, a local curiosity, was the life’s work of railway worker and artist Raymond Isidore. From 1938 to 1964, Isidore undertook the monumental task of covering his entire house, inside and out, with meticulously constructed mosaics, using pieces of scavenged glass, ceramic, and porcelain. Open from mid-May to mid-November, hours and ticket information at the link below (page not available in English).
Visit the Beauce region
For those interested in local history, the Beauce, a region known for agriculture, has its share of gems:
The all-wood Pelard windmill in Bois-de-Feugères (15 km) is open for visits and put into action to grind wheat flour every Sunday from March 15 to October 15, from 2:30 to 6:30. For more information, call 02-37-96-31-08.
The Saint-Orien church in Meslay-le-Grenet (4 km) houses a rare, fully preserved example of a Danse Macabre mural from the late Middle Ages. Contact 06-31-12-10-21 or email eglisemlg@live.fr to organize a guided visit.
